A fishing boat captain from Maybole, along with his four-man crew had had a lucky escape after they collided with a 2,500 tonne cargo vessel off the Isle of Arran.

Donald Gibson, captain of the Spes Bona V trawler put out an emergency call to the Clyde Coastguard at 1.10am on Wednesday 27th January, after his boat was struck by a cargo ship called the Leeswig as it trawled for prawns.

Mr Gibson said that his boat was hit on the port side, the strongest part of the vessel and he believed this probably saved them from a much worse fate.
