Furious Maybole garage owner hits out at 'ridiculous' rates

  • A massive rates rise has left a Maybole Garage owner furious

A Maybole garage owner has hit out after a revalutaion saw his business rates more than trebled - forcing severe cutbacks at the High Street store.

Brian Connolly, who owns the JD Cameron garage and hardware store in the town has branded the rise 'ridiculous', as he has seen his business rates rise from £10,000 to £31,000 per year - putting expansion plans on hold, and making life difficult for his small business.

The new valuation means in real terms he will pay £12,000 – up from £5000 – for the petrol station.

The increase has also forced Mr Connolly, who is also an independent member for Maybole, North Carrick and Coylton on South Ayrshire Council to end his sponsorship of Maybole juniors, as he looks to find ways to cut costs.

Gillian Durrant says

Absolutely ridiculous no wonder there are so many empty delapitated shops making our town look like a ghost town.
